What is Umbra?
Alana Simpson / 2019
Umbra was a magazine filled with poems written by young black writers who were ready for their voices to be heard. They describe their experiences in America as African Americans and the many challenges that come with that. It is filled with several topics that embody the Black Culture pushing the Black Arts movement forward and putting black writers and artist on the map.

First post-civil Black literary group to make an impact in the sense of establishing their own voice distinct from [the] prevailing white literary establishment. " |
Data VisualizationFrom the visualization we see that more artists are incorporated each volume. It started as a very close knit magazine with only writers, but over time it expanded as they began to collab with photographers and add more poets. It also seems that each volume had its own unique contributors and that many people were not in more than one volume and no one was apart of all four works. This is interesting as it is assumed the same people stayed throughout the series since they were such a close knit group during the Umbra Workshops, but it was intriguing to see works created by a variety of people who had different perspectives on life and poetry.
